Digital Footprint True Stories

digital footprint

A university in 2017, withdrew places to several students who had shared offensive memes and messages in a private Facebook group. The group had been created as a way for accepted students to get to know each other before arriving on campus, but university officials found the content of the group to be inappropriate and offensive.  Imagine starting your dream course and settling into your new student life to be sent home because of your online behaviour!

A teenager was arrested and charged with cyberstalking after creating a fake Facebook profile of a classmate and using it to bully and harass her online. The victim suffered emotional distress as a result, and the teenager faced legal consequences for their actions including a criminal record.  A criminal record can prevent you from a lot of jobs!  Think before posting!

In 2018, a student tweeted a racist comment about the prom dress of a fellow student, which was a traditional Chinese dress. The tweet went viral and drew widespread criticism, leading to the student receiving online harassment and even death threats. The incident also drew attention from potential employers, who expressed concern about the student's character and decision-making skills.

These examples illustrate the real-world consequences of negative digital footprints. In each case, online behaviour had a significant impact on the students involved, affecting their admission to further and higher education and future career prospects. It's important for you to understand the potential consequences of your actions online and to take steps to manage your digital footprints in a positive and responsible way.

Make your digital footprint an amazing representation of all the positive things you have to offer the world.  Don’t be afraid of the online world it is full of opportunities.  BUT…  Be aware of the dangers!
