Democracy and Voting
In the week of the general election (1st - 5th July 2024), Meadowhead students also participated in crucial acts of democracy.
Candidates for head student (Oscar, Katlyne, Leo, Zi Han, Evie, Jack, Courtney, Mani, Zain, Eva, Georgie) participated in the final part of campaigning through candidate videos in form time. Y7, Y8, Y9 and Y10 students then ranked the candidates in order of preference – the result will be announced in the final week of term.
In Y12, a mock election was held and students put forward the case for five major English political parties before votes of conscience and competency were held. Well done to Amelia F, Lucy H, Jimi L, Aoife M, Lisa OB, Gunjon P, Ash M and Eliza S, who put forward the case for their allocated party so impressively.
Finally, on Friday morning, after the culmination of a succession of In the News discussion activities during the election campaign, students in all years participated in a “live” In the News to understand the implications of the results and the change in government.
Well done to the Y13 students who experienced voting for the first time this week and to all students for their fantastic participation in these activities (most will be old enough to vote in the next general election in 2028 or 2029!).
