'Two households, both alike in dignity...'
On the last day of spring term, 46 Y11 students travelled down to London to watch a performance of Romeo and Juliet, one of our GCSE texts, at the iconic and world-famous Globe Theatre, on the banks of the River Thames in central London.
It was an energetic and engaging performance, set in modern Britain but without losing the universal power and insight into the human condition that has led to its enduring appeal. Mobile phones, tracksuits, e-scooters and even bike tricks were seamlessly woven into the narrative, creating humour and pathos while adding extra resonance for communities affected by knife crime and gang violence. Information from the Globe can be found here while a review of the show can be found here.
Our students really enjoyed the performance, and were a credit to the school - we managed to spend an hour in the Tate Modern exploring the artwork prior to the performance, survived an hour and a half standing up as 'groundlings' in the open theatre space, and we even managed to avoid the worst of the weather, with blue skies even spotted during the show. The coach's horn playing 'Baby Shark' was another memorable moment.
Well done to all of the students involved, and thanks to Ms Hills and Ms Deacon for supporting the trip.
