Y11 Field Trip to Sicily

The Y11 Geographers had an amazing field trip to Italy over the February half-term. All students had a fantastic time looking at the excellent examples of tectonic activity that Sicily had to offer.

The first day of the trip took students to the islands of Vulcano and Lipari, to look at the stunning black beaches, lava flows and Italian towns.

The second day took students to Alcantara Gorge where students marvelled at the features created by 3 ancient lava flows from Mount Etna, before heading to the historic town of Taormina. Taormina is famous for its crystal clear beaches, stunning churches and Greek amphitheatre, here we had tea at a make your own pizza restaurant which was excellent for all students.

Our final full day in Sicily we climbed Europe's most active volcano, Etna which at this time of the year had record levels of snow fall. Although the weather prevented us from reaching the crater students had a great time in the snow and clambering into the lava tubes (caves left by lava flows) before heading back to the beach front hotel to sit by the sea prior to packing for the return journey home.

My thanks to all students, who conducted themselves excellently whilst we were away and to parents who enabled students to experience this unique adventure.   Mr Chambers
